black + blum is a chic British housewares company started by two friends who met while attending industrial school. One of the product lines they’ve created focuses on the lunch box. No, that leftover plastic thing you kept from the last time you ordered a Chinese food delivery isn’t the same. If you want to eat like a grown-up at work, you need the Box Appetit! I was happy to be hosted to experience it.
It’s constructed from polypropylene and copolyester (BPA free), which give 3 different tactile qualities: smooth plastic, bakelite and rubber. They have several colors, including bright lime and bubblegum pink. Cute!
Every part of the box is functional: even the lid has a dipping well on the underside (think soy sauce for sushi, honey for fruit, mustard for sausage). Within the squared off plate/bottom of box, there are two removable sections: a sauce container that seals off and a diagonal half-sandwich shaped inner box. There’s also a fork with a substantial cutting edge that they call a “fife”. Y’know, like the spork came about. This setup reminds me a little of the meal presentations in first class airline flights.
Though I normally work from home, I recently had to go into the office for a couple of weeks before getting to experience the box. It was disheartening to try and eat well and deliciously . . . when I go in, it’s an office park that sometimes has expensive, high sodium/carbs/fat food trucks outside. They have some pricy vending machines, as well. Of course, I packed my own lunches, but I was limited to what wouldn’t leak, something dry, certainly no tasty and healthy salads with dressings.
The entire box is both microwavable and dishwasher safe. If you do microwave the box, open the lid before you do. Of course, because it’s reusable, this is a much greener way of taking your lunch.
I will admit I had little bit of a learning curve snapping the lid back on.
