The fortress at Ehrenbreitstein — a cable car ride high above the city of Koblenz in Germany — was built in the early 19th century, under the auspices of the Prussian rulers. The site as a place of defense, though, goes back to pre-Christian times.
Restaurant Casino — using the older definition of “casino”, meaning outdoor amusement place — is right by the fortress. You have to pay for a cable car ride/admission to be able to go to the east bank of the Rhine. There are lots and lots of tables outside, but also some inside, too. I was very happy to be hosted to be able to experience it!
Beer at Restaurant Casino in Ehrenbreitstein, Germany
German bartenders are serious about their beer! Each is to be served in its own glass, such as this Bitburger beer. Look at the head on that! It was a very hot day there and the sun was bright. Time to sit inside and cool off with a cold one . . .
“Swede’s cream soup” at Restaurant Casino
Okay, clearly — pardon the pun — this is not a cream soup. It’s a herb and white broth that has added body from diced tubers and sausage with a rough country chop. This is very hearty stuff! The restaurant has regional and international fare with a traditional, rustic touch.
Braised ox cheeks
This dish is braised ox cheeks with carrots (orange and yellow) and “dumplings”. Their dumplings are different from what we call dumplings in the US; they’ve got a meat component and were fried here. The ox cheeks were very tender.
Sure, this is substantial fare considering it’s hot out, but what would you have expected the Prussian soldiers to have ate? Watercress sandwiches? I think not!
