Driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway is gorgeous, but coming up from North Carolina into Virginia, you’re going to want some refreshment! Out in Floyd County, home of the world-famous music shindig, Floyd Fest, is Tuggles Gap Restaurant & Motel. It has that vintage gas station look, because it is!
While you might not expect much for a little place in the mountains, it’s like the Little Engine That Could. Behind the counter, there’s a diner-like soft-lit room with wood paneling. The restaurant supports local farms and sustainable agriculture. They spotlight local musicians — no small thing, in this cradle of Old-Time music and Bluegrass. They also have WiFI, which is helpful in the mountains.
Breakfast is served all day. If you’re looking for something more hearty, they’ve plenty of choices to suit, including homemade soup and desserts. In local parlance, if you want a burger with everything, that’s an “all the way burger”. I personally enjoyed their classic Patty Melt: grilled rye with melted Swiss, grilled onions on a burger.
Sundays, they do the Southern thing: pan-fried with real mashed potatoes and gravy. Saturday’s steak night!
I had my dog with me, plus I wanted to see the splendor of nature around: I took things to go and ate at a local state park.
