Travelers: Products to help so the home stretch of summer doesn’t burn you

Whether you got too much sun this summer and are suffering from the burn or you’re trying to prevent damage, it’s serious business! Anyone who’s had a cancer scare, 2’d degree blisters, etc. knows that short of staying inside all day, you need products that work. I was happy to be hosted to experience some!

A small company right here in the USA — don’t you just love that? — in Cocoa Beach, Florida is making products that help you deal with the sun. Sun Bum (online at has a Sea Spray for hair that actually provides sunscreen for your hair! But they do warn that you should still put on sunscreen onto your scalp. If you’ve ever had a sunburn on your scalp, you know how nasty that can be. If you color your hair, you can forget that if there are burns! This spray is light, not sticky and blocks out humidity without silicones. It has a faint suntan lotion scent.

Their Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is a great, light spray to really protect you. It’s water resistant for 80 minutes, so if you swim or sweat, reapply after toweling off. Don’t spray onto your face: spray on your palms. Don’t get near your eyes and try not to spray it on clothing, is something I discovered.

I was sad to learn the founder of Burt’s Bees, Burt Shavitz, had recently passed away. His products are legendary! Sensitive Facial Cleansing Towelettes with cotton extract don’t even count against your 3-1-1 carry-on travel bag! Here’s a tip: keep them in your day pack, use them frequently. It will help with breakouts, gently.

So, what if the damage has already been done? Clark’s Botanicals to the rescue! The brave founder of the company needed to heal his own skin. Here’s his story:

I myself have had very severe burns. There are skincare lines that claim to have miraculous healing properties, so they cost an arm and a leg and a mortgage payment. And in the end, you can’t really say if they work or not. I truly endorse Clark’s Botanicals. The Age-Defying Radiance Cream first of all adheres to the Hippocratic oath: “First, do no harm.” You’d be surprised how many creams don’t adhere to that. It’s a plush, whipped jello salad consistency (if you can imagine that) that is soothing, not stinging. You get the anti-aging in the a.m. without breakouts. You’re supposed to use it day and night, but I like it at night best — as it’s a little thicker. They say to use your serums on top, which is a little different protocol.
