Recreate not just any spa, but the most luxe, while traveling with illuMask [classic article]

At some of the best spas in the world — including The Greenbrier — they have light-therapy skin treatments. When I was in law school and it seemed like the world was caving in on me, my complexion went bananas. I took my grocery store and long-distance phone money (a different era!) and got light therapy treatments at the esthetician. But who can do that on the road? Plus, you should really be careful while getting beauty treatments abroad. Sure, I’ve gotten haircuts and tinted lashes in foreign countries, but it could have all gone horribly wrong.

Imagine being able to do light-therapy treatments in the privacy of your room, anywhere? illuMask to the rescue! I was very glad to be hosted to experience it.

They come in two varieties: anti-acne and anti-aging. They are these light, plastic masks with LED lights and included battery packs. Each mask has 30 built-in uses. They don’t count towards your 3-1-1 airline travel bag! They don’t leak, they don’t need a power converter or plus adapter. You could use it in your airplane seat, train seat or on a cruise!

The anti-acne one has eye covers like on a tanning bed, while the anti-aging one has yellow tinted lenses that allow you to watch tv, for example. You put the masks on like sunglasses and they only take 15 minutes. I definitely feel it adds to my beauty routine and it’s very relaxing. You experience a mild warmth while wearing the masks.

This is some of the science behind it that they have supplied:

Blue LED light therapy has been clinically proven to kill the bacteria that causes acne, Proprionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and has been widely used by dermatologists and skincare clinics around the world[3]. P. Acnes synthesize and store a protein called a bacterial porphyrin. Once this porphyrin is exposed to blue light, it becomes active and transfers to an excited state, this causes membrane damage and destroys the P. acnes bacteria from the inside out.

Red light helps rid the skin of acne, by helping it heal and rejuvenate. Red light energy penetrates more deeply into the skin to decrease inflammation, increase blood circulation, improve collagen (skin elasticity) levels and stimulate the healing of skin tissues[4]. The combination of red and blue light therapy has been clinically proven to be effective at reducing acne lesions.[5]
