Local sweet goodness: Ohio’s McHappy’s Bake Shoppe [classic article]

With all the strife going on in the world, it’s comforting to take a few minutes out of your day for an old-fashioned snack. Ohio’s McHappy’s Bake Shoppe has several locations in the southeast Ohio area. It’s a sweet place, literally and figuratively!

One of their locations is open 24 hours, but the rest have pretty good hours, too. They’ve been in business since 1972 and haven’t changed or made short-cuts to their original recipes. I think that’s pretty swell, in this era of corporate sameness and enforce uniformity. Their interior looks like an old-timey ice cream parlor and indeed, they do have ice cream available.

You wanna know what they eat in that part of the world? They make the pepperoni rolls invented and popularized by coal miners right across the mighty Ohio River in West-by-God Virginia. They also must have a Greek influence behind the kitchen door: the Delicious Nutty Pecan Queen confection combines the phyllo dough of baklava with the huge nuts of a gourmet nutty bear claw or a pecan turtle. I hate using adjectives like “amazing!” or “yummy!” in my writing because 1) It seems pretty puerile and 2) What I like might not be what you like. Let’s just say that if I lived in Ohio, I’d be in massive trouble: I’d be in bigger clothing sizes within the month!

Their muffins have wonderfully plump berries.

Also, this is a place where you can get gourmet coffee drinks in many flavors.
