Baltimore’s Lebanese Taverna [classic article]

Lebanese Taverna – with several restaurants around Virginia and Maryland – has opened a chic Lebanese restaurant in Harbor East. The atmosphere is light and spacious, with cream colors and mirrors. World music plays in the background. This is the kind of place where you can take it as casual or festive as you like: the menu has a range from mezze – the Mediterranean small plate – to pizza to full entrees.

 

They have a massive selection of authentic mezze ranging from $4.50 to $10. The homemade hummus is some of the best I’ve ever had. Many of the selections are perfect for vegetarians or vegans, too. There are several fresh salads, too, that work as appetizers. Get a few for the table and everyone will have fun sharing.

 

Lebanese Taverna has an impressively varied wine list. A smart bet would be to try a Lebanese wine, either by the glass or bottle. Their different nuances – smoky, spicy – are perfect for the food. The concept of “terroir” really does apply!

 

As for entrees, there are lots and lots of options here, too. Lamb lovers will be impressed when your lamb loin comes out exactly as you specify, tender and juicy. The quality is just top-notch. If you get fish or chicken, they’ll come out plump and juicy… with very generous portions!

 

Even if your tummy is full, full, full at this point, don’t skip dessert. You can try one of their baked goods or refreshing homemade ice cream. They have several kinds of coffee, too, including Turkish and Arabic. Turkish is espresso-like, but roastier and syrupy. Arabic coffee has spices like cardamom and is silky.
