Travelers: save yourself with Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard [classic article]

Last week, I was staying in a little cabin at Schroon Lake — Starry Night Cabins — in the Adirondacks. Have you ever been there? It’s one sweet community around a lake with many nearby sweet communities around lakes and mountains. But the one drawback was the swarm of biting bugs in town both day and night. I had momentarily forgotten that I had packed two kinds of Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard, for which I was glad to be hosted to experience. But the second I wandered outside, I remembered!

Now, I was traveling by car, but if you need products to pass 3-1-1 carry-on travel bag muster, they have some towelettes or you could head to the dollar store for some smaller refillable containers.

I tried both a lotion and pump spray format, both with sunscreen (30 SPF, what the experts recommend you use at a minimum) and a light, pleasant scent. I feel like I liked the spray format better, because you don’t have to rub anything in and you can quickly get protected. I normally get bitten like crazy — being a diabetic, I’m supposedly more susceptible — but I only got a couple of bites. My husband got more bites on the backs of his legs, but I’m guessing he neglected to spray there.

Here’s what they say about it: Repels mosquitoes that may transmit West Nile Virus for 8 hours. Provides effective protection against gnats, no-seeums, sand flies and biting midges. DEET-free, dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic.
