Find out the flavor of the Governor’s cookout picnic HERE

Governor and Mrs. O’Malley hosted the 4th annual Buy Local Cookout this evening to kick off the Buy Local Week Challenge initiative. We should be buying at least one locally grown, produced, or harvested product to work into our menus each day. The cookout not only featured favorites of Maryland’s First Family, but also winners of a recipe challenge which required the Maryland chefs to work with at least one Maryland food producer/farmer.

Each year, the food seems to get better and better. It was fascinating to see familar products: cantaloupes, tomatoes, sweet corn, beef, crab, duck, etc. turned into masterpieces. Even in this casual gathering, many of the chefs had lovely presentation. About 400 invitees braved the heat for the delicacies. There was even ice cream incorporating honey made from hives on the grounds of the Governor’s Mansion! That, and Bethesda’s Honest Tea (a favorite of President Obama’s) were popular tents.

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack was also a special guest in attendance.
