First class luxury: Lufthansa’s amenity kits [classic article]

Some airlines “get it” more than others: part of the fun of traveling in First Class is the amenity kit! Sometimes called a “wash bag”, it contains the necessities for traveling and arriving refreshed. Lufthansa not only wants you to arrive refreshed, but in style! I was very happy to be hosted to experience their gorgeous First Class/Business amenity kits.

For their kits, Lufthansa has partnered with the luxury German luggage firm, Rimowa. Their little cases — ivory cream for ladies, glistening chocolate for gentlemen — are constructed with all the fine details of carry-on luggage! It’s hard-sided, which is really genius for stashing your delicate eyeglasses, sunglasses, watches when you sleep on the plane. The case has a leather hinge, sturdy zippers, two mesh pockets, silky lining. The ladies’ case is most certainly chic enough to use as a miminalist’s minaudière. The men’s case is attractive in the same way, too. Here’s a list of some of the American celebs who love Rimowa:

Alice Cooper, Billy Gibbons, Bradley Cooper, Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, John Mayer, KISS, Matthew McConaughey, Camila Alves, Milla Jovovich, Sandra Bullock, Zoe Saldana.

Inside, like all good gifts, everything is beautifully presented — not just jammed in there. Eyeshades get their own fabric pouch. Earphone covers are wrapped. A brush/comb combo is bound. You’ll also find soft, cozy slipper-socks, earplugs, Lamarin moisturizer and shoe horn for gentlemen, La Mer cream and lip perfection for ladies. Who doesn’t want perfect lips? Also, they have Germany’s “Pearls and Dents” toothbrush and toothpaste, which I actually brought back from a very fancy apothecary in Leipzig as a souvenir.
