Nobody gets perms for volume anymore, do they? The last time I got a perm, I was interning for the late Sen. Paul Simon (D. Ill) on Capitol Hill and I had bitten into the side of my mouth . . . hard. Dispatched to the Senator’s dentist, he said that he had treated gunshot wounds that looked better. Wearily heading back to the office, the AA — a former member of Congress from Indiana — and his assistant told me to leave early, get a stack of magazines and rest. I said that I had already read my favorite magazines for that month. The assistant suggested that I go get a perm, take my mind off my bite.
So, the perm turned out the way perms always did: craptastic. I have one of those wall pics of me standing with the Senator that mostly commemorates my nasty perm and the fact that I was then too depressed to put my contacts in. When it was time to return back to college, my friends were all like, “What did you do to yourself?”
