Roadside BBQ on Virginia/West Virginia line: The Kernel’s BBQ [classic article]

Driving near Harper’s Ferry, WV around the Virginia line on 340 (also on US 15 near Leesburg and other locations), there’s a new roadside BBQ stand that even has a couple of outdoor chairs: Kernel’s BBQ. I took the time to investigate!

Portions are very generous. Kernel’s BBQ takes all the major credit cards, so that’s good for a roadside stand. They have fall off the bone ribs — which I highly recommend — along with pulled pork and chicken. You can get the meat sauced with one of several sauces, which they also sell by the jar. There are also crazy sides, like BBQ mac & cheese bowls!

They plan on switching up the sauces, but here’s what’s going on now:

Lexington, NC Vinegar Sauce: Western North Carolinians are known for a version of their famous sauce, which features ketchup with those same tangy notes. A bit sweeter and not as spicy, ask for a sample!

Goldsboro, NC Vinegar Sauce: Eastern North Carolina is the home of this tangy sauce. Our version features fresh onion, jalapenos, apple cider vinegar and red pepper flakes. You gotta’ try a sample on the pork.

Columbia, SC Mustard Sauce : Less well known for their BBQ than their northern brethren, the South Carolinians have wonderful sauce. Our version is an original homage to this classic “Q” topping.

Kansas City Style Sauce: What BBQ stand would be complete without a tip of the hat to our western BBQ heritage? Our Sweet and savory sauce features notes of chili, cumin, and smoky sweet goodness.
