Ohio’s oldest market — since 1852 — isn’t just for tourists. Findlay Market in Cincinnati is a place where real people get real food grown and produced by local mom & pop companies. Folks shop for locally sourced meats, fish, cheese, veggies, fruits and flowers. There are lots of tempting baked goods and a few places to pick up ready-to-eat things. The market is indoors, so no matter what weather Cincy has, you can still get your shopping in!
One of the cool things about the market is that it’s not isolated: lots of cool little food boutiques have popped up around it. There’s a wine shop that hosts tastings and a deli-sandwich shop, Silverglades, famous for its chicken salad. We’re talking, super-famous! Talk to anybody in Cincy about Silverglades’ grape and walnut chicken salad or their smoked chicken salad and they just sigh. The smoked chicken salad is creamy with a good touch of black pepper. What’s really cool about Silverglades is their stock of rare sausages, pâtés and cheeses. They have things from France and Germany that I usually have to scour the internet for hours looking for! Of course, I bought some . . . I was headed home that day.
If the weather works for you, they have lots of outdoor tables for snacking. There’s often a guy who draws sketches of you while you eat, a local character.
