Local beers, cider at the Faroe Islands’ Irish Pub [classic article]

Irish pubs seem to be popular the world over, even in the Faroe Islands. Torshavn’s Irish Pub is on a second story — but is a first class bar. It overlooks the city harbor and is next to the municipal parking lot. That’s a good thing to keep in mind, as parking is hard to find in the capital’s downtown area. With large picture windows, it has an airier feeling than most Irish pubs.

The bar is filled with beautiful, polished hardwood. There’s even a little “private bar” that was cleverly sectioned off from the main bar. It’s an easy way to feel like a VIP if you’re in with friends. The Irish Pub also serves food.

The night I was there, a soccer trivia game was underway, but it was in Faroese.

The bar serves a number of Faroese microbrews and even cider. It’s great to know that such a small place can support several brands! Black Sheep beer was dark, with a touch of bitterness. Okkara brand cider — the bar actually has three ciders, but Okkara is the only Faroese one — is quite sweet. I don’t know if it’s 100% apple cider or not, as I detected notes of pear and perhaps the local rhubarb . . . it had a fruit cocktail-like flavor. It was a good after dinner drink.
