Get a hangover at a gallows! ‘t Galgenhuisje: Ghent, Belgium’s coziest pub [classic article]

When I think of Ghent, Belgium’s ‘t Galgenhuisje (the hanging gallows) now turned into a pub, I can’t help but recall the chorus to Roger Miller’s “Dang Me”:

Dang me, dang me
They oughta take a rope and hang me
High from the highest tree
Woman would you weep for me.

Just sittin’ around drinkin’ with the rest of the guys
Six rounds bought, and I bought five
Spent the groceries and half the rent
Like fourteen dollars and twenty seven cents.

Ha! ‘t Galgenhuisje was Ghent’s historic 17th c. gallows and last living quarters for the condemned, still complete with rope hooks. I was very happy to be hosted to experience it! The tiny split-level building holds just a few tables on each level. Supposedly, they have live music/dj’s there sometimes . . . God bless ’em. This intimate bar carries many local beers, including fruit lambics, as well as jenevers — “Dutch gin”, but it’s not really what we think of a gin, being aged in oak barrels. Think of it more as a cross between gin and bourbon.

This is a casual, laid-back bar. Dogs are allowed, which more bars should do. If you like the personal attention and closeness of a hotel bar, but you still want to get out of the hotel and experience some ambiance, this is perfect.
