The days are longer and warmer, gardens are starting to blossom. You’re probably getting out and people will — at least unconsciously — be reacting to your scent. How about getting something fresh and new from Demeter? I was happy to be hosted to experience it.
Demeter is a fragrance company that has always thought outside the box. Scents of objects that bring memories rushing back, a mood, a concept, are all part of its library.
Angel Food shower gel is a clear gel with a buttery vanilla scent. Here’s a little secret: use a couple drops for your hand-washables! It will add that layer of something good. This is how they describe it: “Egg whites, sugar, vanilla and coconut. It tastes as good as it smells, and it smells great!
The coconut is our own special touch, from a generations old Pennsylvania recipe, passed down through the family of our founding perfumer.”
Tomato Seeds is just one of those scents that put Demeter on the map. Just like the “sticks in the mud” didn’t see the demand for blue nail polish or gray lip gloss coming, it takes a certain type to be willing to stand out. Here, offbeat is also pretty — imagine that! Spray or dab, then let it warm to your skin. It has that slightly sweet gel part of a tomato. It’s fresh and great for any gender, appropriate for work. It’s soft and subtle. I also noted a tiny bit of cooked tomatoes. This is what they say about it: “The Scent: This one is simple. Demeter’s Tomato Seeds is the smell of the seeds and the gelatinous stuff that holds them in place inside the tomato. It’s wonderful. Really, try it the next time you’re alone.
The Inspiration: Cut that ripe beautiful berry (the tomato is related to berries by the way) and inhale. You won’t soon forget it. And then you can try ours. That’s what we’re going for.”
They say that Flower Show body lotion is inspired by the Philadelphia Flower Show. I went to that once! It was a day where everything went right: the cheap parking spot, the last table at the nice restaurant, fantastic coffee and treats afterwards. It’s a place that must certainly be considered the epicenter of selfies, so dress to impress . . . the flowers. I experienced the scent as being light, white flowers with fresh greens and spicy carnations.
Here’s another enticing and different scent: Spring Break. I get a whiff of pool, suntan lotion, flowering bushes, a touch of salt, a little ozone, but a sweet, feminine floral. This is what they say about it: “The ultimate virtual vacation fragrance, only from Demeter Fragrance Library Suntan lotion, the sand, the sea, the drinking games but in the case of this fragrance, mostly coconut scented suntan lotion.” With Bath & Body Oil, you can put it to many uses.
Grapefruit Tea is an elegant scent that is in the same lane as several expensive, imported scents. I experienced grapefruit zest. It’s like an Earl Grey tea without milk. Light, it’s great for all genders. It’s appropriate for daytime. It’s fresh and clean, but not sour. Here’s what they say about it: “A beautiful bright, tart blend of citrus with soothing base notes of black tea. Fortnam and Mason in London, and of course Paris’ Fachon, sell wonderful Grapefruit Tea blends. A friend brought a package back to us and inspiration struck.”
Butterfly Flowers is quite different. To me, I notice honeydew melon with wild flowers. It is richer on skin. This is what they say about it: “Butterfly Flowers is a captivating fragrance that opens with the zesty freshness of grapefruit and black currant, evoking a vibrant burst of citrus and berry notes. The heart of the fragrance reveals a delicate and enchanting floral elegance of lily of the valley and roses, lending a soft and romantic undertone to the bright and energetic beginning. The base notes of almond and musk add a warm and sensual depth, creating a harmonious symphony of scents that linger gracefully.”
Orange Blossom is a scent that has been in use since ancient times — certainly in the Arab world, later with Romans and French royalty. Here, it’s sweet and silky, with fruity and honeyed notes. It also is quite versatile in Bath & Body Oil. This is what they say about it: “The Scent: Our version of Orange Blossom is full, lush and exquisite, more like the living flower on a warm summer eve’s, gentle breeze. Extracted from the white flowers of the Orange Tree, and a traditional element used in perfume making, this is one of the most popular flowers in perfumery.
Neroli and Orange Blossom both come from the white blossom of the bitter orange tree, but Orange Bloom is sweeter, warmer and more floral. The different smells, and different names, are the result of different extraction processes – steam distillation for Neroli, and enfleurage for Orange Blossom.”
