What’s fresh at the Charlottetown Farmer’s Market?

One of the new trends when vacationing is to get a room or cabin with kitchen facilities and to pick up some of the delicious local produce at a farmer’s market and have at it, economically. I was happy to be hosted to experience the farmer’s market in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

After longing for various gorgeous hand-crafted hats, scarves and other goodies, it was time to check out breakfast. Prince Edward Island is particularly known for its potatoes and they’re in baby potato season — so prized. They also sell local eggs, seasonal veggies, artisan breads and condiments.

The farmer’s market has lots of things that don’t require any kitchen time; you can eat outdoors at one of their picnic tables, even if you have your dog with you. Along with smoothies and locally roasted coffee, bear claws are a PEI favorite. They’re a breakfast pastry with cream cheese and raisins, packing a nice, sweet hit to perk you up in the morning.

There’s also a pierogi vendor and they do things slightly differently in PEI than in the US. They fry theirs lightly and don’t pour on the melted butter. You can add your own hot sauce or sour cream, along with rough-cut scallions. The flavors and textures are bold.
