The best of the past, now: Hanover Farms NY’s roadside stand is 24/7, honor box

Driving back and forth on Route 28 in Ulster County, New York this weekend, I kept seeing a roadside farmstand that appeared to be open each time, even late at night. Could it be some farmer who just happened to be closing up things late with a full load of kale to get rid of? Or was it some night market, the kind I saw in Taiwan this summer? Or did they just have a beer license and were popular on a Saturday night? Well, at some point, curiousity got the best of me and I had to check it out.

Hanover Farms Roadside Farm Stand, 5200 Rt 28 Mt Tremper, NY 12457 845-688-5667, is now open 24/7! This is not just some stand carrying a couple of root vegetables. There are loads of gorgeous organic, specialty gourmet, local produce — like baby purple potatoes, Hungarian peppers (which are great in traditional dishes, like I had in Burgenland, Austria this summer), apples and lots of other fresh goodies.

But that’s the tip of the iceberg (not lettuce, ha ha)! You’ll find local breads, baked goods, local artisan cheeses, international gourmet cheeses that best most supermarkets and rival the best gourmet shops, locally crafted jams, cupboard staples, some international canned goods, local artisan sausages, even local single eggs! I never saw that before. They’re 25 cents and I would have loved-loved-loved them in my starving student/single years.

I found out that incredibly, the farm stand is open 24-7. Even more amazingly, it’s manned most of the time, but sometimes, you just add your purchases up and put money in the drop box! It’s like out of another era that I don’t even know of.
