Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that in Baltimore, we do have a farmer’s market that runs year ’round: 32’d Street Market, otherwise known as “the Waverly Market”. The Farmers Market is located at the parking lot on E 32 Street and Barclay Streets.Open every Saturday from 7:00AM to 12 noon. The best restaurant chefs have always poked around farmers’ markets for produce.
It’s a little early in the season for a lot of Maryland’s produce, but more and more is coming each week. I know that in the mountains just west of us, in West Virginia, this is the time when ramps and fiddlehead ferns are coming up. These type of Spring produce remind one to eat fresh, tonic-like veggies and soon, fruits.
If you eat seasonally and locally in our area, you’ve been eating a lot of tubers or cooking down more fibrous greens. But Spring is the time to get those delicate, shoot-like veggies such as asparagus.
Beets are coming into being and Blacksauce — the famous biscuit folks who travel around to different local spots — is making the most delicious beet and Manchego biscuits right at the market.
