In hot weather especially, the kid in me wants to stop at every ice cream store that crosses my path. The adult in me knows better. Savannah, Georgia has a number a home-grown dessert makers: candies, cookies, pies, honey. I had already indulged in some of sweet stuff while in town . . . but I can’t resist the temptation of locally made ice cream! My Waterloo was Leopold’s Ice Cream.
They’ve been in business since 1919 and the place was mobbed when I went there. I was lucky to snag a table! A family-owned business, they’ve always had a Hollywood connection: songwriter Johnny Mercer lived a block away and wrote “Tutti Frutti” after their signature flavor. One son went to Hollywood and re-opened the temporarily closed shop with the help of Academy Award nominated set designer Dan Lomino. The black marble counters, Art Nouveau light fixtures . . .it’s got old-fashioned charm!
They serve savory Southern favorites as well . . . including pimento cheese sandwiches and soup made from scratch.
Tutti Frutti has a very rich custard-like base, with bits of nuts, and candied fruit. They also have all kinds of other interesting flavors, like rose petal . . . but we have to keep it to a dull roar!
